Direct observation of the particle-phase bicyclic products from OH-initiated oxidation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene under NOx-free conditions

The OH initiated oxidation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (1,3,5-TMB) under NOx-free conditions has been investigated by using a home-made vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization aerosol mass spectrometer complemented high-level theoretical computations. chemical composition the nascent particles from reaction is measured on-line and high O2-bridged bicyclic compounds in particle phase are directly observed determined, with aid deuterated 1,3,5-TMB experiments to confirm species’ assignment. To illuminate formation compounds, potential energy surfaces peroxy radical (BPR) hydroperoxy (HO2), self-reaction BPR radical, have theoretically calculated then their mechanisms discussed detail. This study provides direct evidence support essential role 1,3,5-TMB.
